Zibelemärit (Onion Festival) in Bern - cry with beauty Every 4th monday in november they celebrate zibelimaerit with piles of onions and confetti,
the most beautiful festival in Bern, Switzerland.
At this time the old town of Bern between Bahnhof und Bundesplatz changes into a large market-place.
On hundreds of stands farmers from the vicinity, primarily from the fribourgoise lake district
sell onions wreathed to plaits, winter vegetable, stone-fruits and nuts.
In addition to this market people sell their usual goods.
The market already starts early in the morning. In the afternoon particularly when school 's out and work is over,
carnival elements add to the busy pursuance: Disguised persons emerge and confetti battles take place.
In the evening happenings move to pubs and bars of the swiss capital.
Zibelemärit originally has been a fortnightly autumn market, supported by documentary evidence since the XVth century.
It is reported by the city fire in 1405: Farmers from the vicinity vigorously helped to clear away the debris
and received in return the rights to sell their goods in the city. An autumn market has been installed in the year 1439.
The onions itself came up in the middle of the IXth century. |
